Mohammed Azharuddin was one of the greatest ODI batsmen of all time.He captained India for almost a decade and brought many laurels to the country.Be it his wristy elegance on the on side or his athletic fielding efforts in the outfield he was a treat to watch.His career ended abruptly in 2000 following allegations of match fixing but he had etched his name in the record books by then.Lets have a look at few of the records that he held untill his last match for India.
1.Century in the First Three Test Matches.
Azhar scored a century in each of his first three matches.He was the first player to do it and still remains the only player to do it.He accomplished this feat against England in 1984-1985 series.His scores were 110,105,122 at Kolkata,Chennai and Kanpur respectively.
2.Most Runs in One Day International Cricket.
Azhar had scored a total of 9378 runs till his last match and was the leading run scorer in One Day Cricket History.His record was later broken by Sachin Tendulkar.Azhar was also the first batsmen to score 9000 runs in ODI cricket.
3.Most Number of ODI matches played.
Azhar played in a total of 334 ODIs for India.It was the most number of ODI appearance till then.He was also the first player to play 300 ODI matches.He scored a total of 7 Hundreds and 58 fifties in them.Now the record for most ODI matches played is held by Sachin Tendulkar with 463 matches.
4.Most Number of Catches taken.
Mohammed Azharuddin was one of the most prolific fielders of his time.He could take difficult catches easily and could field at any position.He also held the record for most number of catches taken in ODIs.He took a total of 156 catches in his ODI career.This record is now held by Mahela Jayawardene with 218 catches.
5.Most Successful Indian Captain.
Azhar was the most successful Indian captain till his last match.He had led India to 14 test wins out of the 47 matches that he led in.He also won 90 ODIs out of the 174 he captained in.Now both these Records are held by MS Dhoni.Azhar till Date is the Only Indian captain to Lead India in 3 world Cups.He Captained India in 1992,1996 and 1999 Cricket World Cup.
